Hola!

Tis the Autumn season. Leaves are turning colours, falling, and it's raining. It's also a time for viruses to fall upon us. I spent almost a week in bed with what I think was the common cold. There wasn't much I could do about it, except drink plenty of water, rest, and take lots of vitamin C. I know I'm not the only INC member who has been stricken by this bug, so I am sympathetic to those who are sick.

On behalf of all of us, I would again like to thank Everett Rice for his grand performance at our general meeting last month. Even those of us who have been here for awhile found him informative. I do hope anyone interested in art will have a chance to take his courses. You won't regret it.

Thank you to all who signed the card that I have sent to our sister club in Chicago . Our heart goes out to all of the families who lost a love one in that terrible accident. As DeAnna pensively told me after the meeting, the women involved in the accident were likely foreigners in the United States , far from their extended families. We certainly can identify with the way they feel. Our Open Doors representative, Roberta Huey, and I have been receiving copies of condolence letters from Open Doors affiliates like us from around the world.

Fall brings with it many holidays. The Americans will soon be celebrating Thanksgiving, others are beginning Ramadan, and Hanukkah and Christmas are just around the corner. Our November meeting will put us in a festive mood with our second annual wine tasting and tapas. You shouldn't miss this meeting and be sure to bring your friends. We will have 4 different wines to taste, a cava and liquor, as well as cheese, ham and different olive oils. These wonderful products, as well as others, will be on sale.

Also, our Holiday Luncheon will be held on December 1. You will not want to miss this. We have chosen the Genova Financial Club. Hovering 14 stories above Madrid , the club boasts a spectacular view of Madrid .

This month, Paulette has chosen to highlight Egyptian culture in the capital. My family and I travelled to this historical country for our summer vacation. I just loved the sunsets on the Nile River , the friendly people and the food. I gained about 5 kilos and we were only on tour for 8 days-barely enough time to see how the Pharaohs lived! Our guide was excellent and our tour group immediately bonded. We had been to Egypt several years ago and it was interesting to see so many changes. Last year, Area 3 toured Madrid 's Temple Debod , guided by Elaine Campbell. Egypt donated this temple to Spain in 1968 as a way to say thank you for Spain 's aid in rescuing temples in the Aswan Dam area. It was taken apart in Egypt , shipped to Spain and reassembled again in Madrid . It was built about 2,200 years ago to honor the gods Amon and Isis. Inside, you will find a 3-D map of the Aswan Dam area, the temples that were moved and others that are covered by the high waters. I highly recommend visiting the temple.

So as I spent the week moping around the house, I started to count my blessings. I am thankful I only had a cold, my husband didn't mind fixing lunch, my daughter brought me water, and our cat was happy to keep me company in a nice warm bed. What more can anyone ask for?

Un Abrazo,
Susan

Notes:
I was happy to see Marta Matterson at our October meeting. Marta, you were exquisite as always.
Shannon Maher Wallis has left Madrid . She, Joe, and Savannah Joy, her beautiful newborn, have returned to Miami . Joe will continue his studies and Shannon will soon be working. We'll miss them. Shannon was INC Vice President in 2001-2002.
