Member News - Artist Mil Lubroth opens her studio
Critics have called her the rival of Mary Cassatt, saying she brings the same profound originality to non-figurative painting that Cassatt brought to impressionism. Her work is housed in more than 40 public collections in 11 countries, including the UNESCO offices in New York and the White House in Washington , D.C. Only a partial listing of her solo exhibits runs to over 125, spans 40 years and more than 15 countries. And that's not counting her group exhibitions!
Mil Lubroth has indomitable talent and energy. She has lots to say and share and never tires of finding new ways to say it visually. Inspired by Klee and Rauschenberg, among others, Mil explores the diverse influences that have created today's Spain , her home since 1955. The American artist's work includes painting, drawing, photos and mixed media.
Catherine Coleman, a curator of the Reina Sofia Museum , says Mil has a pioneer spirit that continually experiments and sets out new challenges. She recognizes the difficulties Mil faced as a woman artist-and a foreign one at that--trying to establish herself in Spain at the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s. Mil's success is a credit to both her talent and will to prevail.
Mil Lubroth is a generous artist. Every November, she opens her studio, her private workspace, to share her paintings with the public. This November is no exception.
Her studio is open for three nights, from Thursday, November 20, until Saturday, November 22, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm .
